5 Tips for Improving Your Breathhold

Are you struggling to improve your down time when spearfishing?

Are you interested in improving your breathhold in the pool in a specific Freediving discipline?

Are contractions setting off your panic response and disturbing your relaxation?

If so, maybe these 5 top tips will help you to improve and reach your underwater goals.

1. Find a pool training club near you

The ocean is our playground, and it isn’t always available. So where else can you go that is always calm, great visibility and usually warm? The pool! Weekly pool training can help improve all areas of your Freediving massively with specific and structured sessions targeting your weak areas. OceanSense runs pool training in Airlie beach, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast and also creates specific goal oriented training schedules, let us know if you’d like more info.

2.Limit your underwater movements

As we mentioned in our article Who can Freedive? Freediving is the most natural way to explore the ocean and something we have been doing for thousands of years. But we need to do efficiently.

This sounds simple, but it’s usually the first thing forgotten when “in the moment”. Our Oxygen is like our fuel in our car (thank god not as expensive), the faster we go the quicker we use it up.

So if you’re struggling with down time, take a moment to slow down and limit those movements! You might just find this pumps your numbers up!

3. Improving your breathhold with a routine

Ok, we know we talk about this a lot in our courses and it kind of sounds a little out there, but breathwork is honestly the key to mastering our nervous system! We all know that we want to be in the most relaxed state possible to enhance our breathholds, so by practicing just 10 mins a day of slow belly breathing creates a stronger and faster response to our parasympathetic, allowing us to get that heart rate down and relax more! If you need reminding of some good breathwork routines, get in contact!

4. Upgrade your equipment

If you’re serious about getting better and improving, then it makes sense that the gear you use also needs to improve. This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go and buy the best carbon fibre fins on the market or most stylish wetsuit out there, but be realistic in which parts of your equipment could be stunting your Freediving growth. For example, if you’re using plastic find at the moment, there’s no doubt you’ll be using more effort to move through the water, so an upgrade to fibreglass or carbon fibre might be a good idea.

You can always reach out to us for gear advice and gain our opinion on what equipment could be stopping you from success!

5. Hold your breath more

Sounds simple right? If you work to improving your breathhold, well, hold your breath more! If you can’t get to pool training, or you simply don’t have time to get to sessions, then set out some time to lay down, focus and go through some C02 and 02 tables to help get those contractions under control. There are plenty of apps out there to help you and guide you through different tables. One of our favourites is the one breath C02 table as it takes less than 10 mins and is highly effective! If you don’t know where to start with training tables here you can find out about our Top 3 Best Apps to start your table training.

If you want more information on what table is best for you, reach out to us and we can help you and give you ideas.

So there you have it! 5 top tips from us to help you work towards improving your breathhold and stay underwater longer. As always, feel free to hit us back with any general questions and if you’d like to get more information on any of our plans for 2022.
