Gonzalo’s story is one of discovery, adventure, and ultimately, finding a place to call home. Originally from Peru and trained as an industrial engineer, he left his home country in 2015 to travel the world in search of his true passions, freediving and photography.
After living in five different countries, he settled on the Gold Coast, where he now dedicates his life to the ocean and to sharing his knowledge with others. As a certified Freediving Instructor Trainer, Gonzalo has trained, been coached, and competed alongside some of the biggest names in the sport, including Alexey Molchanov, and is now proud to be part of the elite Molchanovs Team not only as Wave 3 Instructor but also as an athlete.
As a competitive freediver, Gonzalo has participated in more than 16 international competitions, achieving over 30 Peruvian national records throughout his career in both pool and depth. He continues to push his limits, recently reaching a depth of -93 meters in 2025 Depth World Championship.
Based on the Gold Coast, Gonzalo works as an instructor, coach, and Instructor Trainer. He runs regular training sessions at Palm Beach and Runaway Bay, as well as offering online coaching, both one-on-one and in group formats.
His coaching extends beyond the pool and competition world, helping spearfishers achieve deeper and longer dives through stronger, safer breath-hold and equalisation techniques.
Driven by a deep passion for sharing freediving knowledge, Gonzalo has also launched his YouTube channel, Mama Qocha Apnea, where he shares educational and inspiring content in Spanish for the global freediving community.
Whether you are taking your first breath hold, looking to improve your performance, or aiming to reach new depths safely, Gonzalo brings experience, dedication, and a supportive approach to help you achieve your goals in a safe and enjoyable way.
