We caught up with our new instructor, Janice and asked her what freediving means to her. Here’s what she had to say about how freediving has transformed her life!
If you’ve ever dreamed of exploring the ocean in its purest, most natural form, freediving might just be your next great adventure. So, what is freediving all about? While it’s a thrilling sport, it’s about so much more than holding your breath or diving deep. For many, freediving becomes a transformative journey for both the body and mind.
Hi, I’m Janice. I started freediving five years ago, completely fell in love with it, and now I’m on the path to becoming a freediving instructor. Here’s why it’s been life-changing for me—and why you might want to take the plunge:
- Learn to trust yourself
Freediving teaches you to slow down, observe, and truly listen to yourself. As you train, you’ll uncover strength and resilience you never knew you had.
For a long time, I believed freediving was only for the “cool, fit, athletic” types—not for someone like me, an ordinary person with average fitness. But as I learned more about breath-hold techniques and got in tune with my body, I began diving deeper and staying under longer.
Freediving helped me recognize my limits, notice when I was staying too comfortable, and know when it was time to challenge myself. It’s a practice of self-trust that carries into every part of life. The best part? That moment when you break through self-limiting beliefs and realize you’re capable of so much more.
- Find peace in the unknown
Beneath the surface, the world becomes calm and quiet. No emails. No deadlines. No buzzing notifications. Just you, your breath, and the ocean.
Freediving feels like a moving meditation, giving you space to let go of stress and be fully present. With each dive, distractions dissolve into the vastness of the sea. What once felt unknown or intimidating transforms into something familiar—and extraordinary.
- See the ocean from a whole new perspective
Freediving lets you experience the ocean as if you were part of it—gliding effortlessly alongside turtles and swirling schools of fish. Unlike scuba diving, there are no noisy bubbles or regulators to startle marine life. You move silently and freely, creating space for magical interactions—like rolling and spinning with playful seals as they mirror your movements.
- Leave the heavy gear behind
No heavy tanks. No complicated setup. Just grab your mask, snorkel, fins, and a single breath—and you’re ready to dive.
I first started freediving because it was a simpler, more affordable way to explore the underwater world. I still love scuba diving, but not having to haul gear around or spend time setting up has been a game-changer.
Freediving’s minimalist nature makes it perfect for spontaneous adventures. You can get into the water more quickly, more often, and with way less hassle.
- Join an awesome community of ocean-lovers
The freediving community is full of some of the most supportive and adventurous people you’ll ever meet. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a seasoned pro, you’ll quickly find yourself surrounded by ocean-lovers who cheer each other on every step of the way.
I’ve made some of my closest friends through freediving and met countless others who share the same passion. Together, we push each other to grow—not just as divers, but as human beings
Freediving isn’t so much about going deep or looking cool as it is about finding a whole new way to connect with yourself and the ocean.
